Glagolitic script

Glagolitic script...

It is the oldest Croatian script, first used by Croats in the 10th century.

The creators of Glagolitic script are considered to be the brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius, who brought it to our region as part of their mission to educate and enlighten Slavic peoples.

Glagolitic letters have their names and numerical values, and each name carries meaning. The first nine letters convey the message:

A = az,
B = buki,
V = vjedi,
G = glagolju,
D = dobro,
E = jest,
Ž = živjeti,
DZ = zelo,
Z = zemlji

The message reads: I, who know letters, say that it is very good to live (on) Earth.

While other nations abandoned Glagolitic by the 12th century, Croats embraced it, further adapted it, and made it a significant part of Croatian culture and identity, leaving us a legacy of over a thousand years of mystical stone inscriptions, richly decorated liturgical books, charters, and documents.
