Ravni Kotari/Zagrad

Ravni Kotari/Zagrad...

Ravni Kotari, the most fertile part of northern Dalmatia, spans a vast flysch area between Bukovica, Benkovac, and Novigrad Sea in the northeast, to the narrow coastal strip from Zadar to Skradin (where the Krka River meets the sea) in the southwest, and from Zadar’s hinterland in the west to Skradin’s hinterland in the east.

Near the center of this great plain, along the east-west crossroads of conquest routes, stands the 265-meter-high hill Nadinska Gradina, with remnants of its turbulent history—abandoned Illyrian, Roman, Croatian, Venetian, and Ottoman fortifications of the former city of Nadin. Below the ruins of this abandoned city, to which we owe our name (Zagrad meaning “beyond the city”), lies the village of Zagrad, home to the Atelj family.
